Situated on the edge of Hyde Common, Fordingbridge, in the New Forest. Bacons is an unpretentious country retreat. It has spacious grounds and provides a feeling of seclusion, even though there are other cottages in the vicinity. To complete the rustic atmosphere, there is an open fire in the spacious dining room and another in the somewhat smaller sitting room, with a supply of dry logs for both fires. There is also oil-fired central heating, so it's not absolutely essential for you to light a fire.
The accommodation.The ground floor has two reception rooms. The sitting room has a log fire, lounge furniture, television and video. The dining room gets the sun as well as heat from the kitchen. It also has an open fire, easy chairs, a country style dining table with simple bench seats and a serving hatch from the kitchen. There is a cloakroom with toilet and washbasin off the entrance hall. The kitchen has an Aga (easier to use than a conventional cooker), a microwave, dishwasher, fridge and an old farmhouse-style kitchen sink. There is a separate room containing a large chest freezer and the central heating boiler. There is a pay-phone. Just outside the kitchen is an outhouse containing an automatic washing machine, and with ample lock-away space for storing bikes. There are 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms upstairs (one with shower over).
Outside. Behind and to the right of the house is a large area of lawn, with a picnic table and plenty of space for recreational activities. A five-bar gate provides access to this if you wish to park cars off the gravel track. In the winter there could be mud here and you may prefer to park on the grass verge outside the gate. Beyond the lawn there is a paddock and an area of field, which produces hay in the summer. Warning: gates must be kept closed to prevent ponies etc entering the grounds. You, the tenant, would become financially responsible for any harm to animals resulting from gates being left open.
General: There are no extra charges - your electricity, fuel oil and logs are inclusive in the rental. Duvets and pillows are provided, and all beds will be made up with freshly laundered linen. No smoking indoors, please.
Please Note: Bacons is furnished to a comfortable and homely standard. It has been an outstanding success over many years mainly due to its idylic location, with ponies often present, and the immediate proximity of forest walks. Bacons has not yet been graded by any tourist authority, although it does reflect most of their recommendations. All legal requirements are met, including fire regulations, and the house is cleaned professionally by a specialist company between lets. Returning visitors from previous years will be pleased to learn that Bacons is enjoying a considerable amount of smartening up of decor during the winter 2012-13. All the mattresses have been replaced. Duvets and pillows are renewed regularly, with more improvements planned and implemented whenever there is a gap in the holiday bookings. For your comfort we suggest that 8 adults (or possibly 6 adults plus up to 4 children) are considered to be the maximum that can be accommodated at Bacons.
